This was no procession, however, as he was pushed hard <\/span><span class=\"s6\">the whole <\/span><span class=\"s6\">w<\/span><span class=\"s6\">ay <\/span><span class=\"s6\">by Mani <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Lettenbichler<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">(Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) <\/span><span class=\"s6\">and<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> for some part of the morning,<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> Travis Teasdale<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">(ASP Rope Mclarens Racing)<\/span><span class=\"s6\">, who finished second and third respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5338\" src=\"https:\/\/enduroworld.co.za\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/81144D19-79F2-4960-A7ED-151588ADAE4A-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s6\">With heavy overnight<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> rain once again<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> necessitating a change of route<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">due to swollen rivers, c<\/span><span class=\"s6\">onditions <\/span><span class=\"s6\">on the whole<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> were<\/span><span class=\"s6\">much<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">better <\/span><span class=\"s6\">than <\/span><span class=\"s6\">the previous day<\/span><span class=\"s6\">, with riders able to adopt a more flowing style<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">as the route dried out slightly in the sunshine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s6\">I<\/span><span class=\"s6\">n <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Wade\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s6\">own words<\/span><span class=\"s6\">,<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> he went out <\/span><span class=\"s6\">\u2018<\/span><span class=\"s6\">hot<\/span><span class=\"s6\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> and tried to ride as smoothly as possible, maintaining his intensity and minimising mistakes so that the riders in pursuit would have to <\/span><span class=\"s6\">push hard<\/span><span class=\"s6\">, and take more <\/span><span class=\"s6\">chances on the <\/span><span class=\"s6\">unf<\/span><span class=\"s6\">orgiving<\/span><span class=\"s6\">terrain. <\/span><span class=\"s6\">By halfway, just after Soldiers Way, he had pulled a 4:30<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> minute<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> lead<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> but<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> Mani clawed <\/span><span class=\"s6\">some of that <\/span><span class=\"s6\">back to just over 2:24<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> minutes<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> by the finish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s6\">Mani was happy with his result<\/span><span class=\"s6\">, being<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> only his 2<\/span><span class=\"s8\">nd<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> Roof<\/span><span class=\"s6\">,<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> and while he pushed hard in the morning to stay with Wade<\/span><span class=\"s6\">,<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> he conceded that navigation was a challenge for European riders <\/span><span class=\"s6\">like him <\/span><span class=\"s6\">who are not used to <\/span><span class=\"s6\">the Roof\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> race format of pure <\/span><span class=\"s6\">GPS<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> routes with <\/span><span class=\"s6\">limited marking<\/span><span class=\"s6\">.<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> \u2018<\/span><span class=\"s6\">W<\/span><span class=\"s6\">ith so many bushes and so many different paths to choose from, reading the terrain <\/span><span class=\"s6\">around you <\/span><span class=\"s6\">becomes<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> so important and I\u2019ve definitely learn<\/span><span class=\"s6\">t<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> a lot for next time<\/span><span class=\"s6\">.<\/span><span class=\"s6\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s6\">This year\u2019s Roof<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> of Africa <\/span><span class=\"s6\">podium featured not only the 7-time winner of the <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Mother<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> of Hard Enduro, but the 2022 <\/span><span class=\"s6\">FIM Hard Enduro World Champion <\/span><span class=\"s6\">and 2022 <\/span><span class=\"s6\">SA Extreme Enduro Champion<\/span><span class=\"s6\">. <\/span><span class=\"s6\">With seven Roof wins under his belt, Wade is now just two wins away from equalling the all-time record held by Alfie Cox, whose last victory came in 2001. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s6\">\u201cThe Maloti Mountain weather presented us with some serious logistical challenges this year \u2013 even more so than usual,\u201d commented <\/span><span class=\"s9\">Charan Moore, Roof Race Director and Founder of Live Lesotho<\/span><span class=\"s9\">. \u201cWe\u2019re therefore especially proud that we were able to deliver another classic edition of the Roof, and that we could provide a rewarding challenge for everyone from the world\u2019s top Enduro riders to the weekend warriors in the Iron Class,\u201d he added. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s9\">Once again, it was the riders in the Silver Class who had the longest day in the saddle, and this is where perhaps the greatest upset happened. Overnight leader Austin Stuart (Orange County KTM) saw his 25-minute lead whittled away due to technical difficulties, leaving the way open for a trio of you<\/span><span class=\"s9\">ng<\/span><span class=\"s9\"> Durban riders to occupy the podium. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\"><span class=\"s6\">Luke Walker (Motorex Alfie Cox KTM) \u00a0and 16-year-old prodigy Thomas Scales (Ride KTM Durban) both passed Walker\u2019s teammate Daniel Schr\u00f6der, with Walker\u2019s winning time being <\/span>9h32:27 across the three days of the Roof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">The battle for the Bronze Class honours was hard-fought to the end, with Tate Str\u00f6h ultimately emerging victorious on one of just four Yamahas in the finishing field of 200 bikes. His winning margin was just over 22 minutes from Stiaan Potgieter (KTM), and Stefan Tolmay (also KTM) in third.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s6\">Meanwhile, riders in the Iron Class <\/span>completed the full route for Day 2 with the winner being Tom Classen (KTM) who led from start to finish.
